Filming the Police

Project Title: Filming the Police
PI: Salome Aguilera Skvirsky
Award Type: 1-Year IIRP-Based
Department: Cinema & Media Studies
Division/School: Arts & Humanities
Start Year: 2026
Description:

We will convene a three-day workshop with colleagues from Europe, from the United States, and from Brazil—all working on the intersection between policing and moving image culture. The selected scholars all take a humanistic approach to the topic, though they employ a range of methods; scrutinize a broad array of different kinds of objects, from police training films to body camera footage to experimental and popular moving image representation to courtroom evidentiary exhibits; and work on and within different national contexts and across the civil law/common law divide. This is the first step to developing an international working group that will foster conversations, public-facing events, and publications (individual and collaborative) that, taken together, have the potential to profoundly shift the discourse surrounding moving images and police.
