Experimental Cinema Now: the Politics of Form is a three-day symposium for contemporary scholars and artists working in the field of experimental cinema to engage questions immanent to the discipline at a time marked by seismic shifts in media and by experimental cinema’s acute responsiveness to political, gender, cultural, and environmental issues. In the 1920s-30s, an international community of artists flocked to Paris to expand and question the limits and capacity of cinematic form. In myriad ways, Paris gave rise to avant-garde cinema. One hundred years later, robust institutions supporting the preservation, distribution, and creation of experimental cinema in Paris (Light Cone, L’Abominable, Centre Pompidou) mark the city again as a premier international destination for makers and scholars of experimental media. Given the momentum of experimental filmmaking in Paris, this symposium establishes what will become an annual event that gathers scholars and practitioners for sustained conversation across 4-6 panels, 2-3 keynotes, and 2 nights of screenings. Experimental Cinema Now 2027 responds to the question, “what is experimental cinema now?” and our inaugural year’s spotlight is on contemporary women filmmakers working at the intersection of identity and global cartographies and geographies (specifically, Courtney Stephens, Ana Vaz, Frédérique Menant, and Malena Szlam).
