New Symmetry Principles for Particle Physics and Quantum Matter

Project Title: New Symmetry Principles for Particle Physics and Quantum Matter
PI: Clay Cordova
Award Type: 2-Year IIRP-Based
Department: Physics
Division/School: Physical Sciences
Start Year: 2026
Description:

This two-year collaboration between the Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Chicago and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) will advance the rapidly developing field of generalized symmetries and their applications across theoretical physics. Recent breakthroughs, triggered by the discovery of new notions of symmetry, are transforming our understanding of quantum field theory, particle physics, and phases of matter, extending the reach of foundational ideas like Landau's theory of phase transitions and Nambu's concept of symmetry breaking. The collaboration builds on a deep shared heritage: Yoichiro Nambu discovered spontaneous symmetry breaking at Chicago, while Louis Michel, at IHES, pioneered the mathematical study of symmetry in field theory and phase transitions. Led by Clay Córdova (Chicago) and Julio Parra-Martinez (IHES), with the participation of Austin Joyce, Dam Thanh Son, Lian-Tao Wang, and Raffaele Tito D'Agnolo, the collaboration will be organized around annual thematic weeks combining scientific talks at the University of Chicago Boyer Center in Paris with working sessions at IHES, and will include a public outreach lecture during the second year.
