Connecting Global Histories of (Art)Photography; we are seeking to develop a visual and verbal lexicon of photography in the Middle East and North Africa, including its relationship to broader African and Mediterranean regions including Egypt, Turkey, Iran, South and West Africa. Our goal is to establish an understanding of photography’s historic role within these regions, beginning with historical colonialist practices that have migrated into contemporary practices ranging from the commercial to the colloquial and the artistic. Our work will begin in June 2024, primarily on Zoom, with scholars, artists, and curators to develop knowledge and methodology leading up a month-long residency by Letinsky in Cairo in the spring of 2025. During the residency, Letinsky will develop her art work in dialogue with her long interest in the optics and politics of photography, and, vitally, coordinate with Farid and Khalifa, a series of workshops with local scholars, artists, and curators to develop projects, essays and art that will be presented in the three day symposium in Paris, November of 2025. This event will be documented and published in print and digitally by early 2027.
