Description:

This three-year project seeks to establish an international working group to identify and help to protect endangered documentary film archives of the past and present in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. The project organizers will host a workshop at the International Institute for Research in Paris (IIRP) in the first year of the project to seek out and connect filmmakers, archivists, and festival organizers across Eastern Europe and Eurasia, to assist with grant writing for filmmaking and preservation activities, and to identify thematic areas of research interest, which may include documentary cinema in the era of disinformation; environmental impacts of war, migration and displacement; the politics of cultural heritage; gender equity and LGBTQ+ rights; state-sponsored violence and occupation; cinematic archives in the digital age; and freedom of expression. In the second year, it will bring together researchers and students with Eastern Europe and Eurasian based and displaced filmmakers for a series of study days and screenings. In the third year, there will be a symposium to present the outcomes of student and faculty research projects, as well as public screenings of new and ongoing documentary projects.
