Building Global Collaboration to Advance Brain Health for Women Across the Life Course

Project Title: Building Global Collaboration to Advance Brain Health for Women Across the Life Course
PI: Francesca Farina
Award Type: 2-Year IIRP-Based
Department: Medicine
Division/School: Biological Sciences
Start Year: 2025
Description:

Two-thirds of people with dementia are women and prevalence is expected to triple by 2050. Women’s risk of developing dementia is twice that of men and longevity alone does not explain this disparity. Identifying other contributing factors is crucial. However, most research adjusts for sex rather than testing group differences, focuses on limited individual-level risk factors, and is largely US- and Europe-centric. Our collaborative project aims to address these gaps by establishing an international work group to examine multi-level drivers of dementia risk in women. First, we will host a kickoff meeting at the Paris Center with partners from the Global Brain Health Institute (Dublin), Barcelona Beta Brain Research Center, Women’s Brain Foundation (Basel), Université Paris Cité, American University in Cairo, and the Brain Research Africa Initiative (Cameroon). Our goals will be to define research questions, identify available datasets, and present methodologies for data analysis and harmonization. Following kickoff, group members will source datasets and conduct analyses to address key research questions. Findings will be submitted for publication and used as preliminary data for larger grant submissions. The project will conclude with a closeout meeting at the Paris Center, comprising a public event and future planning.
