A series of pending commemorations, including the 250th anniversaries of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 and of the Franco-American treaties in 2028, provide an occasion for new critical and historical reflections on the international and consequences of the American Revolution and for the creation of a new international research network. The Karla Scherer Center for the Study of American Culture and its American Program at the John W. Boyer University of Chicago Center in Paris requests three years of funding to enable our faculty and students to engage in collaborations and conversations with colleagues in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East focused on the global origins and legacies of the American Revolution. Working with AMERICA 2026, an ANR-funded project administered through Paris 8, we propose a series of annual international seminars from 2025 through 2027 designed to bring together emerging scholars (especially doctoral students and junior faculty) with eminent scholars at the Center in Paris on themes of common research such as “Empire and Economy,” “Law and Diplomacy,” and “Slavery and Revolution.” The international Summer seminar of the American Program will be unique in the field and a foundation for future collaborations.
