Early and Later Chinese Bronzes in European Collections: A Pilot Project for Research Collaboration

Project Title: Early and Later Chinese Bronzes in European Collections: A Pilot Project for Research Collaboration
PI: Yung-Ti Li
Award Type: 1-Year Target Region
Department: East Asian Languages & Civilizations
Division/School: Arts & Humanities
Start Year: 2025
Description:

The proposed pilot project intends to explore the possibility of collaborations with three European museums which house important Chinese bronze collections: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst, Cologne, and Musée Cernuschi, Paris. As the museum objects are isolated finds devoid of their original provenance and archaeological and historical contexts, the project is to explore possible collaborative research projects that aim to study the collections regarding provenance, dating, stylistic analysis, manufacturing processes, laboratory analyses, and history of collection. Potential projects include research on the Shang (ca. 1600-1000) and Zhou (1000-200 BCE) artifacts in Rijksmseum; provenance and technical studies on the Shang and Zhou and later Chinese bronzes (ca. 960-1910 CE) in Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst; and participation in an on-going research project of Chinese bronzes in Musée Cernuschi under the auspices of the Center for Research on East Asian Civilizations, Paris. The proposed pilot project will be jointly conducted with Professor Emeritus Chao-jung Chen at the Institute of History and Philology (IHP), Academia Sinica. Professor Chen is one of the leading scholars of early Chinese bronzes and bronze inscriptions. She is also the founder and the PI for the most comprehensive database of ancient Chinese bronze inscriptions now housed at IHP.
