Incantatory Words:
Greek and Egyptian Languages in the Magical Papyri
Conference organized by Christopher Faraone (University of Chicago) and Sofia Torallas-Tovar (University of Chicago)
Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 September 2021
The corpus of Greco-Egyptian Magical Formularies provides a window into the ritual practices, beliefs, and language phenomena of Antiquity. The corpus presents a real challenge to the researcher in the variation of linguistic registers it presents, ranging from formulary language, literary and poetic expression, to the mix caused by language contact. In this conference we would like to explore the possibilities that a full examination of this interesting corpus of texts offers in three main aspects: language contact in Egypt, literary Greek in the magical papyri, and lexical issues.
