Please join us for our first Chicago Book Salon of the year with Jonathan Levy (University of Chicago) who will present his new book Ages of American Capitalism: a History of the United States published by Penguin Random House.
The discussant will be Nicolas Barreyre (EHESS).

Today, American capitalism may be experiencing yet another great turning point. What does the history of American capitalism, up to the present day, look like from inside versus outside of the United States? In this book salon, Jonathan Levy of the University of Chicago will be in conversation with Nicolas Barreyre, a leading historian of the United States based in Paris.

Jonathan Levy is Professor in the Department of History and the John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He is a historian of economic life and of the United States, with interests in the relationships among business history, political economy, legal history, and the history of ideas and culture. His first book, Freaks of Fortune: The Emerging World of Capitalism and Risk in America (Harvard, 2012), won the Organization of American Historians' Frederick Jackson Turner Award, Ellis W. Hawley Prize, and Avery O. Craven Award and the American Society for Legal History's William Nelson Cromwell Book Prize.

Nicolas Barreyre is associate Professor at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. He is the author of The Politics of Economic Crises: The Panic of 1873, the End of Reconstruction, and the Realignment of American Politics (2011) and  Gold and Freedom: The Political Economy of Reconstruction, 2015, University of Virginia Press. He is the coeditor of Historians across Borders: Writing American History in a Global Age and A world of Public Debts, University of California Press, 2014 and A Political History, Palgrave Macmillan, 2021.

This event is organized by The University of Chicago Center in Paris in partnership with the CENA at the Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and the Department of History and the Law, Letters, and Society Program at the University of Chicago.
