Please join us for a Chicago Book Salon on The Cambridge Handbook of Language Contact (Cambridge University Press, 2022) edited by Salikoko S. Mufwene (University of Chicago) and Anna Maria Escobar (University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign)
Contributions to the 2-volume Cambridge Handbook of Language Contact (2022) have shown how wide this research area is and how much light the scholarship on language contact sheds on various aspects of linguistic behavior. The publication has also made it obvious that language contact is one of the oldest subfields of linguistics, starting with genetic creolistics as an offshoot of genealogical linguistics in the late 19th.Century. The subfield has expanded to where, at the end of the Handbook enterprise, we the editors realized we could have considered a third volume, to accommodate emergent topics at the intersections of language contact with sociolinguistics, psychology, colonization, multiculturalism, and various other research areas, a reality that also underscores the need for interdisciplinarity. Five of us, including the editors and authors, will discuss the intellectual contribution of the Handbook to linguistics.
