The Back End of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle: Power Plant Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management in the United States and Abroad
In his talk, Robert Sloan will review the nuclear power plant decommissioning process in the United States as provided for under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended, along with a range of related US legislation and a complex regulatory regime administered in large part by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This legal and regulatory regime involves complex engineering, safety, environmental and financial questions that in some cases are rather controversial and they are handled rather differently in certain countries. Time permitting, I also plan on discussing the option of storing (and disposing of) stockpiles of spent nuclear fuel coming from some smaller nations with significant nuclear power programs, e.g., South Korea and Taiwan, in a multinational facility.
Robert Sloan, a former executive vice president and general counsel at Entergy Corp., has broad-ranging experience in the energy industry in the United States and across the globe. He is a senior fellow at the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute at Chicago and senior counsel at Sidley Austin.
