The Center in Paris
6, rue Thomas Mann
75013 Paris, France

The headquarters for the University of Chicago’s community in Europe is located in the 13th arrondissement on the Left Bank of the Seine. Since the early 1990s the Paris Rive Gauche development plan has been revitalizing the district’s nineteenth-century industrial buildings, commissioning housing and offices by internationally recognized architects, and establishing new locations for four important institutions for research and higher education-the French National Library, Université de Paris VII (Denis Diderot), the Paris Val de Seine school of architecture, and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales. This massive transformation of the urban core of a major capital city can be likened to the great modernizations of the nineteenth century, such as the Burnham plan for Chicago and the Haussmann renovations of Paris. It is one of the most watched civic projects in Europe today.

In her 2003 design for the center, the architect Catherine Furet created a microcosm of the University’s Hyde Park campus by clustering three interconnected buildings around a central quadrangle. The seven thousand square foot facility houses a great room and library for public events, five classrooms, a seminar room, language and computer laboratories, and a research group with eleven private research studies. Technology is state-of-the-art throughout the complex.
